This photograph was taken at the end of a sunny afternoon as showers started to blow in off the Atlantic Ocean towards the Poison Glen Valley. As I approached the church I noticed a rainbow starting to form. I quickly set up my camera and waited. After a while this striking rainbow developed which I managed to photograph.

This was not the light I was looking when composing this image. As I was driving towards the location there was a nice bit of warm light highlighting the ridge which brought out its lovely detail. Unfortunately that didn't last long and I had to make do with a dull overcast sky instead. However I don't think it turned out to bad as the dull overcast conditions helped add some drama to what is really a spectacular mountain.

The calm stillness of a beautiful sunset is broken by the sound of a crashing wave at the Giant's Causeway on the Co Antrim coast. The Giant's Causeway is today owned and managed by the National Trust and it is the most popular tourist attraction in Northern Ireland. A new visitor centre has been constructed at the site and was officially opened by First Minister Peter Robinson and Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness in July 2012, with funding from the National Trust, the Northern Ireland Tourist Board, the Heritage Lottery Fund and public donations.

I arrived early at Slieve League planning to get this shot. Had an idea in my head of the composition I was looking for and had worked out where I thought the sun would dip below the horizon. So I headed up the steep slope from the car park looking for a suitable location for my composition. After a while I found this vantage point and prepared for the shot by setting up my camera on the tripod and took a couple of test shots. When I was happy with the composition I sat back for an hour or two waiting for the sunset and this is what I ended up with.

Beautiful sea arches exist all around the world. The Great Pollet Sea Arch on the eastern shores of the Fanad Peninsula in County Donegal, Ireland is a fine example of their beauty. Sea arches commonly form where cliffs meet the sea. A sea arch is created when the natural erosive forces of the sea break through a section of rock and after many years of continuous erosion leaves behind an arch.

The nice warm light of the setting sun on the foreground rocks gives the impression of another pleasant evening sunset at Bloody Foreland in County Donegal. It couldn't be further from the truth. It was blowing a gale off the Atlantic along with one of the highest spring tides for years. It was almost impossible to keep the camera steady and dry in the strong wind and non stop waves crashing against the rocks. Shortly after taking this photograph a freak wave hit the rock in the foreground covering me and my camera in the freezing Atlantic surf.

This old wreck has been stranded on this beach since the early 1970s. I took this photograph back in 2010 and unfortunately there's not that much left of it today.

The late afternoon sunshine was interrupted by an approaching rain shower coming in of the Atlantic Ocean at the "Poison Glen" giving rise to a dramatic double rainbow. The Glen used to be called “Heavenly Glen” by the locals, as they thought of it as their Heaven on Earth. However a mistake by an English cartographer in the translation of the Irish word for Heaven, (the Irish word for Heaven is neamh and the Irish word for poison is neimhe) which differs slightly from the Irish word for Poison and the name stuck.

The bridge in the photograph is located in Connemara, in the west of Ireland and featured in the film. Since then it has become a big tourist attraction for thousands of film fans every year. Local wags say they are being conned: so many stones have been taken overseas as trophies that the bridge must have been rebuilt at least three times! For just a minute all the tourist had gone leaving only this quiet man fishing alone at the bridge.........

<image:caption>Location: Ballynoe Stone Circle, Ballynoe, County Down.

The Ballynoe stone circle is a large circle of over 50 standing stones, some as large as 2 metres high and is located near the town of Ballynoe in County Down. It is thought that the site dates back to the Stone Age. The original site was further modified during the Bronze Age when a burial mound was constructed within the main stone circle. Its location with superb views of the Mourne Mountains and its size make it one of the most impressive stone circles in Ireland.

The beautiful Poison Glen is located at the foot of Mount Errigal near Gweedore in County Donegal. Poisoned Glen was originally known by the local people as Heavenly Glen. However an error by an English cartographer during translation confused the Gaelic word for Heaven (neamh) with the word for poison (neimhe). Unfortunately, due to this error, one of Ireland’s most beautiful places is now known as Poisoned Glen. The evening sun highlights the distance hills with lovely soft light to give a warm peaceful if not Heavenly feel to this photograph.

According to ancient legend, the Giant’s Causeway was built many years ago by an Irish warrior called Finn MacCool, so he could cross the sea over to Scotland. This can be difficult to prove or disprove. However geologists today, firmly believe it is the result of an ancient volcanic eruption that cooled slowly to form the distinctive hexagonal columns.

<image:caption>Location: Bregagh Road, Stranocum,County Antrim.

This beautiful avenue of beech trees known as the “Dark Hedges” was planted in the 18th century by the Stuart family as a landscape feature on the approach to their house in County Antrim. It is a popular tourist attraction on the Bregagh Road near the village of Stranocum. The avenue has even been used as a scene in the hit HBO’s series “Game of Thrones.” Locally it is said to be haunted by the “Grey Lady,” a ghost who appears to pass by the trees at dusk and disappears as she passes the last tree.

<image:caption>Location: Mahon Falls, Comeragh Mountains, County Waterford,

The Mahon Falls is an 80 metre waterfall on the Mahon River located in the Comeragh Mountains in County Waterford. It's a very popular tourest attraction with people taking all sorts of risks crossing over the treacherous falls to get to the other side. I must admit I'm to to sure why they bother. It looks much the same no matter what side of the river you're looking from.
